Cathy Allen is "The Board Doctor"
We all want a doctor who will listen before telling us what to do, one who takes the time to get a clear and complete picture before racing in with a costly or disruptive fix. After years of working with all kinds of nonprofit organizations, I believe most volunteer board members already know what makes their organizations special and also what challenges they face. Few have time or money to waste on a consultant pushing one-size-fits-all fixes.
My mission is to help volunteer board members of nonprofit organizations understand and embrace their roles and responsibilities, and organize their work for maximum effectiveness and minimum headache. Even a very healthy board can get better if they want to. I bring a solid grounding in nonprofit best practices, work hard to stay up to date in my field, and begin every project with a focus on the client group's existing strengths. Like medical doctors working with patients, getting better (and staying that way) is a team effort.
What I Do
I renamed my consulting business "The Board Doctor, LLC" when I relocated to Brevard County, Florida and through it I provide information and support to nonprofit boards in the Indian River Lagoon area and across the country. Services are available on a per-project or hourly basis. More information is located on the Services page.
In my native Ohio, I owned and operated Creative Option C, LLC, a successful nonprofit organizational development firm for almost 15 years, My goal has always been to provide high-quality and cost-effective consultation and assistance to volunteer board members (and their staff) in organizations both large and small. I am proud to hold a Certificate in Nonprofit Board Consulting from BoardSource as well as a Certificate in Nonprofit Financial Management from the Nonprofit Leadership Center of Tampa Bay and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from the Center for Nonprofit Resources (Toledo).
Prior to consulting with nonprofits and government agencies, I had a long career in state and local government, environmental advocacy, and worked on both candidate and issue campaigns. I remain an avid reader in the field, including organizational and personal development, business success, and leadership. In my spare time I enjoy exploring nature and watching history and science programs on TV. I serve on the board for the Friends of the Carr Refuge.

Here's What the Clients Say
I have served on several nonprofit boards, but I learned more from a few hours of Cathy Allen's coaching than I did from years of trial-and-error experience. I wish I had met her sooner, but now I know I'll be a more effective board member in the future. Cathy's expertise could help any organization to get past those inevitable bumps in the road and get back to focusing on their mission.

With near-immediate results, she has directly assisted our organization to focus, improve, and further develop our structural processes which lend to increased and more effective operations. Highly recommended.
--Melissa Martin, Acting President, Brevard Indian River Lagoon Coalition
Cathy provides dynamic and engaging presentations on topics related to non-profit development. She is well informed, experienced and delivers a program carefully designed for her audience. I highly recommend her as a consultant with her new company, "The Board Doctor."
--Cheryl Hart, Past President, Friends of Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge
I have had the pleasure of working with Cathy since 2012. We met through her work as a consultant when she attended workshops I was facilitating through The Center for Nonprofit Resources. I was instantly impressed with Cathy's skills in nonprofit management and her professional manner. I recommended Cathy to many nonprofits for consulting especially with regard to strategic planning and board development. Cathy and I worked together to develop materials that I am certain I will use throughout my career. I encourage nonprofits to call Cathy first when they need help with leadership and board training. They will be glad they did.
